Advancing Regional Diagnostics: GADx at DIATROPIX Launch

DIATROPIX diagnostic manufacturing site in Mbao, Senegal

On December 12, 2024, the Institut Pasteur de Dakar (IPD) celebrated its centenary by marking a major milestone in African healthcare innovation: the inauguration of the expanded DIATROPIX diagnostic manufacturing site in Mbao, Senegal. This high-volume facility, now ISO 13485-certified, is set to transform access to rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) across the continent, targeting critical health priorities like HIV, malaria, and other diseases.

GADx is proud to have played a key role in this transformative project, providing technology transfer and training alongside our partners at Bionote (Korea). Our CEO, Dr Mark Street Docherty, was thrilled to be at the launch event to show our support for this high-volume manufacturing initiative.

Strengthening Regional Health Resilience

The launch of DIATROPIX represents a pivotal moment for healthcare in Africa. Until now, Africa has been one of the world’s largest consumers of rapid diagnostic tests, with over 500 million RDTs used annually – primarily for HIV and malaria. However, these essential tools are largely sourced from outside the continent, making Africa highly vulnerable to supply chain disruptions during global crises.

By localising production, DIATROPIX enhances Africa’s ability to meet its diagnostic needs, reduce dependency on external suppliers, and respond more effectively to public health challenges. As highlighted by Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Diagne, Head of DIATROPIX, this facility is a testament to the power of regional innovation, collaboration, and shared vision for health security.

Collaboration in Action: GADx’s Contribution

At GADx, our mission is to enable equitable access to diagnostics through innovation and collaboration. The DIATROPIX project aligns perfectly with this vision. Through technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and hands-on training, GADx supported the establishment of manufacturing processes that meet international quality standards. This ensures that the diagnostics produced are not only high-quality but also tailored to the specific needs and infrastructure of the region.

We extend our congratulations to Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Diagne and his team at DIATROPIX for their leadership and dedication in bringing this project to life. Their efforts, in partnership with organisations like FIND and Unitaid, are driving forward a new era of sustainable, locally driven healthcare solutions for Africa.

Innovation and Health: The Forum Highlights

The DIATROPIX launch was part of IPD’s broader Health Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum, a gathering of key stakeholders, thought leaders, and innovators committed to improving health outcomes across Africa. The event showcased inspiring startups and innovations that are transforming healthcare, including:

  • Wergu: A mobile application connecting patients with local pharmacies for medicine delivery and healthcare information.
  • Njureel: E-health solutions focused on women’s health.
  • Eyone Medical: A digital platform connecting patients and healthcare professionals to enhance care quality.
  • Tanél Health: Tools to digitise and integrate healthcare services.
  • Sammanté: Simplifying healthcare management and providing access to essential information.

These initiatives reflect the growing ecosystem of innovation driving health resilience.

A Shared Vision for the Future

The DIATROPIX expansion, supported by FIND, Unitaid, GADx, and other partners, underscores the importance of strong partnerships in achieving global health goals. Regional manufacturing is not only about producing diagnostics; it is about building resilience, empowering communities, and creating a sustainable future where everyone has access to life-saving tools.

At GADx, we are committed to continuing our work with partners across the globe to advance diagnostic access and innovation. The DIATROPIX project is a shining example of what can be achieved when we work together towards a shared mission of Diagnostics for All

Congratulations once again to Institut Pasteur de Dakar, Dr Amadou Sall (CEO, Institut Pasteur de Dakar), Dr. Cheikh Tidiane Diagne, and all partners involved. Here’s to a healthier, more resilient future for Africa and beyond.

Frequent testing is invaluable and so it is vital to find ways to drive down the cost of kits and increase production levels. As a social enterprise, GADx can transform this process because it ‘breaks the link’ of ‘having to make profit for shareholders’.
